Kappa Kappa History

In Spring 1972, seven exceptional undergraduate women named Dorothy Burgess, Wyietta Gail Knight, Sylvia Dalton, Jocelyn Minter, Katrina Powell, Rosetta McCoy, and Gwendolyn Burton were initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. under general membership.  These seven phenomenal women were students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  They decided to take the opportunity and establish a student organization on our campus called the TiAKA Club which stood for “Those Interested in AKA”.  The purpose of the organization was to discover and collaborate the efforts of like-minded, college-educated women, who were interested in starting a chapter.

On Friday, March 19th, 1976 sixteen phenomenal women brought the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc® . to the campus of UNC Charlotte.

Over 40 amazing years later the Kappa Kappa Chapter is better than ever. Kappa Kappa is a legacy in itself representing scholarship and service as the premier sorority on campus showing why we are ... "The Chapter So Nice They Had to Name it Twice!"

The Kappa Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is so much more than a social organization; it is a community service organization first and foremost. This year alone we have been of service to several community organizations as well as to the college campus. We sustain our high ethical standards by maintaining scholastic excellence with the highest GPA of all greek-lettered organizations and hold award-winning campus forums and social programs.

Kappa Kappa demonstrates that our membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is a SERIOUS MATTER by achieving the legacy of greatness that ALL Alpha Kappa Alpha women strive to maintain.
